My K-5 II, purchased about a year ago, is showing signs of a flakey
power board. Several times in the past week, I've been taking pictures
and it would just lock up and the only way to reset it would be to pull
the battery.

My first K-5 started with intermittent problems, then finally died. I
sent it in to KRIS, and waited through the long delay while they
repaired it, and it died again a while later. I tried having it
repaired down in San Diego and it was converted to IR, but that repair
did not last and they weren't able to re-repair it.

I do have a K-x for backup, but the shutter button on it is having
issues, and it would cost more to repair than it would to replace with a
used one.

My K100s, had the viewfinder delaminate or something. Both of my K-5s
have now had power board issues. My K-x is having issues with the
shutter button. My first K-20 was dropped so I can't blame all of it's
troubles on manufacturing, and at this point I don't remember if I had
to send my replacement K20 in. My AF-540 was an unmitigated piece of
shit that I lost count of the number of times I had to send it in for
repairs.

There are a lot of things that I love about my Pentax gear, but
reliability isn't one of them. It's almost like owning a FIAT with a
viewfinder.

The only real problems I've had with Pentax cameras:

My first Pentax SLR was an A3000. Nothing wrong with it, I just outgrew it really, really quickly.

Super Program that was in my rucksack, crushed when the rucksack was run over by a 5-ton truck at Ft. Hood.

That was *NOT* MY fault - *I* loaded and stowed it properly, but some fool pulled it out of the truck to get to their own rucksack and did not put it back. When it bounced out of the back of the truck, the following truck in the convoy ran over it. If I had known about it, I would have gone back and made sure I re-stowed the rucksack properly.

K1000 with the sticky mirror return (local camera guy fixed it for me).

My PZ-1p has the notorious battery door crack.

*ist-D battery door just fell off one day while I was walking through the woods. Fortunately I heard the little "ting" noise and stopped to see what had happened. The store I bought it from was still a Pentax dealer then & the local camera repair guy was able to get a replacement door. Meanwhile gaffer's tape held the old door in place so I could still use the camera.

K20D with that clump of about 150 bad pixels. I talked to KEH's repair dept, and it's going to cost $250 to repair it - meanwhile the spot healing tool in Camera Raw works reasonably well. OTOH, KEH has an EX+ K20D body for only $257, so I could just replace it for about the same cost.

My AF-540 hasn't given me quite as much trouble as Larry's has, but I don't think it works quite right. I did have to send it to Pentax for repair right after I got it, but the current problems are more likely from when I dropped it. I should have sent it to Pentax for repair again instead of just asking them to send me the red plastic window cover.
