That's a good strategy, Brian. Have you considered simply upgrading
the motherboard/processor in your existing PC? Basically a computer is
just a bunch of compatible components and the motherboard/processor is
the only thing standing between you and 64-bit OS.

I did that a few years ago, when I found a new motherboard at a
computer store "garage sale". I put the best bang-for-the-buck
processor at the time in it (an AMD Phenom quad-core) that was 64-bit
compatible and it still gives me acceptable speed/performance today. I
had a lot of fun putting together the components inside an existing PC
case. I've got it dual-booting Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7. I still run
the free Adobe CS2 programs at home, but I have CS5 stuff available at
work.

Anyway, you can essentially get a new computer for (perhaps) less than
buying a whole new system by going a generation or so backwards in
Processor and Motherboard and still get 64-bit compatibilty. You just
have to make sure that the motherboard will accept your existing HD
connector (SATA or IDE, for example) or else spend $70 and get a new
HD while you are at it.

Once I got into it, I upgraded nearly everything (RAM, Power Supply,
DVD/CD reader/writer, HD) but even then putting together your own
components results in a much higher quality system than a commercial
system which often cuts corners. newegg.com is the U.S. place to get
components and read reviews. YMMV.
