Actually, Mick, I'm somewhat doubtful myself. Pentax seems to time their patents so that they issue shortly after the product itself is available. Examples include their ornamental design patents for the 67II, ZX-7, etc.
For this patent in particular, I would guess that they actually built and tested something during the development of the cancelled digital MZ-?? and the not-cancelled MZ-S. If they had actually released the digital MZ-?? perhaps this patent would cover it.
