This sounds like a good idea.

It reminds me of Sanyo Hyperdrive that I had used for a few years, but stopped using because its HDD became too small, and the card-reader was too slow for the moder card size and speed.

I am also a bit worried about low-priced WD HDDs. I am a bit more confident about Seagate portable drives.

In fairness, I think all manufacturers' low-priced HDDs are prone to be defective. ... maybe to a slightly different extent... Knowing a bit about HDD industry, I am guessing the reasons for that: For the cheap consumer drives, it is cheaper for the company to replace some deffective drives than to carefully test all of them. Enterprise-level drives are much more expensive, and they undergo very careful testing.

So, expecting the price being around $200, I wouldn't jump on it (cheap drive + relatively high price).
I might consider instead something like this:

and a separate mobile HDD from Seagate or Transcend.
(I've been recently looking at Transcend rugged 2TB HDDs that cost
in the vicinity of $115-125.)

Western Digital has a new line of portable hard drives with a built-in
SD card reader and the ability to back up the card without a computer:

It also seems like you could use the WiFi functionality to review
images on your tablet or phone (though I always worry about raw file
support).
