I much prefer to use AF rather than manual as I have more confidence in its
ability than my eye and its much quicker than me. However for macro work I
would usually use manual focus as the AF is unlikely to focus on the exact
part of the subject that I would choose.

I mostly shoot landscape and occasionally have some close subject right at
the bottom of the frame - (typically below all the focus points). I really
should use hyperfocal distance charts.
