When I first started shooting film seriously more than 25 years ago, I
shot BW almost exclusively because it was essential to the kind of work
I was doing. Now I shoot equal amounts of color and BW. I don't really
think a lot about how a scene translates to BW. But I have developed an
instinctive sense of how colors will be represented in grayscale. For
example, I look at medium orange on green, and I know they'll be
matching grays if I don't filter one down. I guess it eventually becomes
an almost unconscious thought pattern. In that sense, color is much
simpler: Orange on green is orange on green.
