On my last trip I did backup onto USB thumb drives. My Android tablet has both an SD card slot and a USB port, so I just took the card out of the camera and plugged it into the tablet, attached the USB thumb drive and used the tablet to copy the files. Easy, simple and lightweight.
My Samsung doesn't have either a SD slot or a USB port. It does support add on adapters for both but you can only use one at a time so copying from SD to USB involves the extra step of copying to the Samsung first.
I gave that a quick test this afternoon - probably not as tedious as I first thought.
