For iPad devices, all you need for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards is the Lightning to SD 
Card Camera Reader cable device. Place card in the reader and connect to the 
iPad, any card organized with the standard DCIM folder layout will be readable 
and transferable with the Photos app to the iPad. Both JPEG and raw files are 
transferred. 

A similar Lightning to USB Camera Adapter allows iPhones, other smartphones, 
card readers, and most cameras' image files to be transferred to the iPad as 
well, using the appropriate USB cable for the device or camera as well. 

Note: these adapters transfer images to iPad devices and the iPad version of 
the Photos app, not iPhone devices.
