Quoting Igor PDML-StR <[email protected]>:

Hi All,

Brian was (and possibly a few others were) interested in a
light-weight solution of backing up photo files from SD cards to the tablets.

Last night I found this, and thought that it *might* be yet another solution for some:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L6M1H1C/
(and there are a few similar ones from other brands, e.g.
http://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Stellar-Android-Tablets-Smartphones/dp/B00GMG2GEO/ )
While this doesn't solve the issue of how to *read* files from an
SD card to the tablet, it can be used as an "external" storage
to which you can write from an Android tablet.
(I didn't look if similar exist for Apple tablets.)

Now, the issue is how to read from an SD card to the tablet or phone.
That can be done with the help of a micro-SD card with an adapter to SD.
So, one can shoot to a micro-SD card with the adapter, and then
plug it into the tablet (or even a phone that can read micro-SD card)
without the adapter.

Depending on the requirements, such a solution can work for some people.

Interesting device but I think I've more or less solved my problem.

I bought a USB hub that includes an SD card reader. This one:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201087387406

I wasn't sure whether this hub would allow the tablet to read an attached USB flash drive and the SD card at the same time but it was cheap enough to take the risk - and it does.

So plugging the hub into the OTG USB adapter connected to the Samsung's multi function port means I can transfer files direct from the card to the flash drive without the extra step of copying to the tablet first.
