Still working on the elements of a system for moving my photo database off my

Machine for backing up the photo database? Or maybe it isn’t a bad idea.

it *is* a good idea; the only reason i don't use Time Machine as a backup for my photos is that there are too many of them for the destination disk i use; instead, i automatically duplicate imported photos to a drive on my home server, and then i periodically also back that up to a third drive (Aperture makes this easy, with Lightroom you'll need additional tools or manual steps)

since Time Machine is truly incremental, if you use it for photos, the photos that don't change aren't unnecessarily duplicated — Time Machine remembers which ones are already backed up; however with Lightroom, the database is stored in a single large file, so every time it changes, the whole thing will be backed up; so if your LR catalog is large, it could slow down Time Machine backups significantly (Aperture uses a "package" file for the database, so the incremental backups are much smaller)

Time Machine defaults to hourly backups, which can be a bother; on my partner's computer, i use a tiny app called Time Machine Scheduler to run it only in the early morning (it goes to a Time Capsule over wifi, so it takes a while); i have used this for several years without trouble, but not on 10.9:

on my own computer, Time Machine is set to "off" and i simply run it manually from the menu bar when i know i won't use the computer for a while (this risks me forgetting, but these days most everything important is backed up as soon as it gets to my computer anyway, so the risk is minimal)
