Thanks, Godfrey. I read Steve’s response before reading your’s and was inclined 
to consider the Time Machine options he describes. You have given me pause. 
Currently I run Time Machine and do separate backups of the system, my photo 
database, and other documents using Carbon Copy Cloner. 

I’m now thinking of using the latter to backup the photo database and catalog 
and let Time Machine handle everything else. I’ll check out ChronoSync to see 
if it might be advantageous in place of CCC. 

FWIW, my photo database, while too large to keep on my MacBook Air, is probably 
not that large compared to most folks here.
