Thanks Bruce, Jack, Alan, Ann, Dan & Bob. Comments much appreciated.
Bob - Shiprock (the rock) is near Shiprock (the town) in north-west
New Mexico, about 50 km from Farmington. It has of great religious
significance to the Navajo people.
Cheers
Brian

'morning all,
Being fans of Tony Hillerman's novels, my wife and I had Shiprock on our
'must visit' list during our USA trip.
We, together with our two sons, had planned to arrive in the late afternoon,
scout around for a good photographic location and then sit back with a glass
of New Mexico red and wait for the sunset. As it happened, getting out of
Farmington (where we were staying) took an eternity so we arrived much later
than we had hoped. Beggars couldn't be choosers, so this was the best we
could do.
Disclosure: I got rid of some wires crossing in front of the rock, my
justification being that had I climbed a fence and moved a bit closer, the
wires wouldn't have been visible anyway...
