I don't know how much image degradation I'd get, even with a "decent" 7-element teleconvertor, but given that the A*'s a decent prime lens, it's unlikely to end up worse than the 100-500, is it?
The A* 300 is going to be MUCH better as a 300, and very likely be better than the zoom with a 1.4 or even 2x converter attached. And the 300mm will be lighter and easier to handle as well!
