Whenever I need to batch-rename files, I am using FastStone Image Viewer.
It is free and works well (it does a few other batch jobs well).
[Occasionally I also use FastStone Photo Resizer, - which is also free. -
But that's typically when I need to quickly resize several photos from the
phone.]
I found that sorting by whatever works better on a collection, not on the
original folder.
