consider using your iMac in Target Display Mode as a second display for the laptop; all it should take is a cheap Mini DisplayPort cable from one of the laptop's Thunderbolt ports to the iMac's Mini Displayport port, and pressing command-F2 on the iMac keyboard

i do this daily with a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 and a 2011 iMac 27, although in my case it requires a Thunderbolt cable (the plugs are identical, but the functionality is somewhat different); the iMac itself still runs in the background as a server, and i access its UI via Screen Sharing when needed

the older 27 inch iMacs, even though superseded by retina iMacs, have great displays
