IMHO, most of the 35-70 zooms are pretty good. A short zoom range, low speed
zoom is fairly easy to get right. I have a very cheap Sigma 35-70 3.5-4.5
that is adequate at all focal lengths and apertures. There is a bit of
barrel distortion at the short end, and pincusion at the long, but not
enough to be a bother for normal subjects. It gives far better results than
I have seen from cheap P&S cameras and is a lot more usable than a 5.6-8.0
on a P&S. In fact, I consider the 35-70 on a ME Super to be my best hiking
outfit when photography is not the primary consideration. The constant
aperture of the f4.0 you are considering would be an asset if you use a
non-TTL flash.
