I do have the Archive folders ... I've done it manually intentionally...(just higlighting and typing "A" in small batches
I had turned off the auto archiving thingy.

yes, probably … i archive my lists by year periodically, and i notice
things get slower when have on the order of 10,000 messages in a mailbox
(aka folder); i suspect i'm on a faster computer too

Thunderbird's built-in archiver (which i don't use except accidentally)
archives automatically by year, so you could just select a bunch of old
messages and choose Message > Archive and it should take care of it
