I've used my monitor as a slide viewer by bringing up a white page
elements and propping up the screen at a low angle - or just holding up
a sheet of negs or slides against it in its normal position

I'm sure there are similar apps for Android (pa-TOOIE!) etc. Even a
simple flashlight app would work for the purpose.
