For best results you will want a "first surface" mirror to prevent ghosting from what would otherwise be a reflective front and back surface. Discarded copy machines are nice sources for kaleidoscope mirrors. They contain several matching (high quality) mirrors that are on pretty thick glass (not easy to break) and have a very long to narrow aspect ratio. All one needs to do is form an equilateral triangle with them and tape them together. Then shoot through this triangular tube to get the kaleidoscope effect.
Stained glass/marble kaleidoscopes are cool. You can buy kits for them. Perhaps it would be possible to make one in such a way that it could be used as a tradtional kaleidoscope OR detach the end to use the tube to shoot photos through.
