Wow - they have simplified switching the center post to being mounted sideways. On the 3021 that I have the process of switching to the side mount is fairly cumbersome, since you have to unscrew the center post, reconfigure it to be side mounted, and then screw it back together.

When I broke the old tripod and replaced it with the newer 3021 I did not initially expect to use the center post at a right angle - with just the head and no center pose the tripod goes right down to ground level. But after I tried the sideways mounted center post a few times I came to rely on it - it adds a lot of flexibility to how the camera and lens can be positioned.

Thanks, Ann! The tripod is a Manfrotto 3021 BPRO - discontinued now, I
think.

looks like 3021 is very similar to but a bit beefier and taller than the 3001 BPro i had until yesterday; both can still be found used pretty easily; i sold mine (good shape, no head) for $60

the Manfrotto 055 and 190 series supersede these, respectively, and continue the idea of center posts that go to a right angle, though the new ones make it easier

what strikes me is the the grip-action ballhead you used (as shown in your photo of your old setup) pretty much obviates the need for a right angle column, since it extends sideways fairly far and is easy to reposition

fwiw, on the 3001 i sold, the long portion of the center column is removable, leaving just a stub and allowing the tripod to go flat to the ground
