Ann,

There was a joke about a nouveau riche guy who comes to the Mercedes
and wants to buy a new S600. The sales person asks him:
- What's wrong with the one you bought yesterday?
- The ashtray is full.

If the only problem is that you cannot sign in websites, I wouldn't
jump into buying a new computer.

When you are trying to sign in, what type of error are you getting?
You wrote: "somehow Avast is involved". Are you getting an error
that the certificate is incorrect and is it where you are seeing
Avast mentioned?
Are you able to sign in into Thunderbird?

At the very least, I would suggest trying two things:
1. If it is only a problem with the browser, - I'd suggest installing
another browser (I don't know what you've been using, but try Chrome or Firefox).

2. If the error mentions Avast (we can try to troubleshoot this, if you
want), - you can uninstall Avast (Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> uninstall Avast) and see if you can log in again. Then you can try to reinstall Avast. (I assume you are using the free version of Avast.)

Couple of months ago, I saw that the 2015 version of Avast created
a problem for Thunderbird, but not for browsers. But I can see why
the same thing can create a similar problem for an old version of
a browser (and I am recalling now that you are using some ancient
Firefox, aren't you?)
