Hi Bill: While not a difference between mini 2 & 3, you might want to consider the model with cellular connection even though you state the device will only be used as a controller. You may find you enjoy using the iPad for other stuff down the road, and the cellular connection is great to have when out in the field as it were. Cheers, Christine
