I understand the reason why now... I'm just impressed at how widely
it's done in China.  I am not sure I ever saw a single tree without
the white paint - at least not in the major parks in Kunming.  Rural
Mojiang, it was less prevalent now that I think about it.

I think it must be easier to paint all of them the same way than it is
to identify the ones that need to be protected. Anyone can be given a
bucket of paint & instructed to paint all the tree trunks from the
ground to five feet.

The painter wouldn't have to know which ones are susceptible to fungus
or insects if he/she is going to paint all of them.
