Yes, Calibrè works well on OS X. For OS X, I'd convert it to a PDF. But I do most of my reading on the iPad mini … iBook on the iPad mini images the .epub nicely, much better than the OS X version does.
The ebook works well other than when it tries to force a particular page design to be a two page spread. That's a difficult concept to manage in a .epub format.
