I tried it on a K3 and K-01. I wondered if there may be a compatibility
issue with live view so when I walked through the house I was using the
K3 with the finder, no live view. I also updated the K3 firmware to 1.21
before the test, just in case - but no luck.

Hi Mark, I'm not sure you wrote which camera. I see that the results
with Pentax flash units are mostly dependant on camera models. When
trying P-TTL with AF540FGZ, I got so-so results with the K-20D and
completely inconsistent results with the K-5 series*, while the K-3
seems to work very well.
Cheers,

Thanks again - I just tried more testing of the flash on the A* 200 and
got totally inconsistent results. I walked through the house and
randomly fired test images. There were three times when the flash
suddenly started working and kept working for a few frames - then it was
back to 100% total discharge. I put the flash on the DFA 100 and it
worked fine, all the time. With the A*200 lens I got about 30 correct
exposures out of 170 test images.
There is a long thread on Pentax forums about this issue that is full of
inconsistent observations about the AF160FC. It seems clear that people
are having wildly different experiences with this flash. Since the
manual says "The correct flash output in obtained in P-TTL auto mode
only when the flash unit is used with auto-focus lenses." I don't think
I can claim it is defective, so - back to B&H it goes!

You could try to clean the contacts and the mount on the lens. A
lenses don't transmit any digital data like F lenses. Did you mount
the flash on the lens? It's heavy and with a long lens... maybe the
weight has some effect on the lens mount/contacts

Just to double check - that's with a manual focus lens?
It looks like I should ask Pentax to confirm how this should work and
maybe get a replacement.

My flash works normally with aperture to A.

I need to check this with my af160fc. If I remember correctly you
should dial the aperture ring to A and it should do PTTL

It seems that the AF 160 FC flash has garnered many positive
reviews,
so I
decided to get one. It arrived yesterday and I found no P-TTL
compatability
with my A* 200 macro lens. At first I thought it might be
defective -
but
going over the manual I find (on page 26) a statement that P-TLL
mode
will
accurately meter only with auto focus lenses. That is a tremendous
surprise
- I've had 2 AF360FGZ's and one Metz flash that all support P-TTL
with A
lenses. The ringflash seems to be something of a bybred since it
also
supports the old TTL and does not support high speed synching. Just
thought
I'd post that as a heads up to anyone else considering this flash
and
who is
not using an AF lens.
I tried the unit with a few AF lenses at it works perfectly. An an A
lens it
produces the pre-flash but output is always 100% - I ried several A
lenses
with no luck.
So - this is going back to B&H after being out of the box for
only an
hour
or so.
I've been having pretty bad luck with flashes over the past few
months -
both my AF360FGZ's gave out within a couple weeks of each other
back in
January. The Metz 58 AF-2 that I bought to replace them still
works, but
it
no longer illuminates the control LCD screen and needs to be sent
in for
a
warranty repair. (At first I thought it was a settings issue, but
Metz
customer support said to send it in.) Now the the AF160...
