The fellow at the reptile centre in Alice Springs pointed out that you have to try pretty hard to be killed by a snake in Australia. The venom may be highly toxic but the snakes have very short fangs so it takes a long time for the venom to get anywhere important, and immobilising the limb buys a lot more time again. They won’t get through clothing so if it’s not too hot, trousers & shoes should be all you need. Once you do get medical help they have kits to identify the venom so the correct treatment can be applied.
