Phlox were a common perennial on the south side of Chicago when I was growing up in the '50s. I would pluck the blossoms and suck on the little tube-like stem at their base. The reward was a tiny taste of sweet nectar. Still love Phlox, but I no longer suck — at least not in the literal sense :-).
