This is gratuitous effusion. Read if you like. ; -)
Anyway, went to Camden Yards yesterday to see the Orioles play the Red Sox
and took an MZ-S, the SMC-F 24-50mm f4, and the SMC-F 70-210mm f4.5-5.6. I
had a belt pouch for the extra lens and swapped frequently. First time with
this combination, and it felt very good. The MZ-S is solid in-hand, and by
golly if I haven't convinced myself that the F's are the perfect companions
for it. They completely match the solid feel of the body, both in terms of
heft and build quality. I felt very confident keeping these in-hand or
around my neck, even at the risk of having to jump out of the way of foul
balls (a high risk where I was sitting). People who worry about the feel of
the plastic FA's will know what I mean. I might have felt less confident
with the FA 24-90, for example, especially with it's likely-to-get-bumped
hood attached. I have nothing against the FA's, of course. I just liked
the feel of what I was using. I also also decided something along the lines
of what looks good. There used to be debate here about how bad the silver
limiteds looked on the PZ-1p, as if it mattered much. To the extent that it
does matter, I found that the grey color of the SMC-F's is very nearly a
match for the rubberized portions of the MZ-S, making it a very good looking
two-tone combination. I didn't bring my polarizers, and had only 400 speed
film, both because I started out in an overcast rain that brightened to a
brilliantly sunlight afternoon in a great stadium. So I know what I will be
missing from the prints. But the camera/lens set-up really felt good. No
worries. I like those solid F's on the MZ-S. I wish they had made more of
them.
