Sounds good. However, I'm not entirely sure that the 2010 iMac 27" can be
driven as an external display. That's pre-Thunderbolt, and I am under the impression
that the ability to be used as an external display came in with the Thunderbolt
hardware.
Target Display Mode (TDM) predates Thunderbolt; it is a little complicated
to sort out which machines can use which iMac as an external display, but i
double-checked before i posted — Paul can do it
note that TDM does not work at all with the 5k ("retina") iMacs
i'm fairly familiar with TDM because last year i purchased an iMac
specifically to run it as both a headless server and as a display for my
MacBook Pro; i wound up with a Thunderbolt iMac, but could have used
pre-Thunderbolt
my own setup has worked very smoothly; the high-quality iMac display can be
calibrated from the laptop (i'm using Spyder 4Pro), and when i need to
control the iMac/server, i use Screen Sharing to virtually display the
iMac's own desktop on my laptop; i put it in another "space" and drag it to
the iMac display, so control-left-arrow and i've effectively switched to
running directly on the iMac
the only downside from my perspective is that my iMac doesn't support a VESA
mount for more adjustable positioning (one can special-order iMacs with VESA
mounts, but they are exceptionally hard to find used)
