Then the combined boundary length (circumference) of the M smaller pixels
covering the same area as one large pixel will be Sqrt(M) times larger then

the boundary between photosites is also an area that is less "functional" at transmitting photons to their respective photosites; each microlens is less perfect at its edges, plus there is at least some area that isn't photosensitive between each photosite

so on denser sensors, there is not just more linear boundary, but also a higher proportion of total sensor area that is less functional
