ecotourism is meant to be an alternative to more destructive practices such conventional tourism or extractive industries

i worked at an environmental magazine in the early 90s when concept was under development; there's no fixed definition of ecotourism, so the term is often misused, but i do think there's a net benefit when it succeeds in supporting a local population while reducing impacts compared to the other ways that population would have earned a living (e.g. slash & burn

it would be much less appropriate to use the ecotourism label for visiting places that would otherwise have no impacts
