Well casting no aspersions, but he is a college student and may may have topped off his anti-freeze the night before. And maybe he is just young with good circulation. Iowa is where you live just to prove it can be done.

The thing about Iowans is no matter the weather they like to be a little
bit uncomfortable.  This photo is a bit of a Frankenstein creation. It
was shot on Oly M4/3 using a 50 yr old 50mm Sears lens in the Pentax M42
mount. I cropped out 2/3rds of the  photo and resized  in Perfect resize
to 11x14. It may or may not have been worth it but it was a fun experiment.
