I probably should have mentioned that "kia orana" is a greeting in Cook Islands Maori. Their language is closely related to NZ Maori, who say "kia ora". There is history of settlers from the Cook Islands colonising NZ so the lingual similarities are not surprising.
Cook Islanders are brought up as bilingual (alongside English) which keeps their language alive. We could do better here... when I was in primary school we learned only a little Maori. I can almost count to 10... Having said that there is actually a Maori-language immersion primary school a couple of km from my house.
