NW> af280t. It worked okay for most of what I needed. The 500 has more than NW> double the power of the 280 though and sometimes I cannot see how I got
Nick, isn't this wrong? GN of FTZ500 is roughly the same, only slightly (maybe half a stop) higher than AF280T! You can't compare them direct as Pentax OVERINFLATED the FTZ's GN by stating it for the longest zoom of it. Shitty! Only Metz and perhaps Sunpak don't inflate their GN. That's lying to the customer isn't it? Actually, all the "GN 50" FTZ500s, Nikon speedlights, EOS EF540s, all are inflated GN is at their longest zoom. So so industry standard is to state GN at 35mm wide coverage. Any good working (good capacitator) older Vivitar 285, Metz 35CT, etc... shoe flash will have slightly more oomph than any of these high bucks OEM flashes! Why? Their GN is stated as GN 35(m) at 35mm coverage, while these OEMs have only about 32 at 35mm coverage... At least the pre-FTZ pentax flashes are true about their GN, unlike the FTZ flashes. Otherwise, the FTZ500 has superb functions of course! But the GN is inflated. You can attach a simple fresnel device to your old flash to make it "zoom" and double it's GN at long focal lengths too... and many flashing people never do direct flash, at least I don't.
