So my question is - how do others store
prints so that they are both protected but accessible for viewing from
time to time?

I'm talking here about reasonably large prints - most are about 45cm x
30cm (18in x 12in).

i manage an archive of my dad's prints, negatives and contact sheets (about 1800 prints); every print is in a appropriately sized archival poly sleeve, with an image id printed on a small sticker on the outside of the sleeve; the prints themselves have an image id and a print id penciled on the back; i believe these are the sleeves:

this poly material isn't perfectly clear, but it is clear enough for occasional temporary display use; the material is thicker and more protective than some clearer plastics

a database connects the image id to the id and size of each print made of that image, along with other info to help us find images

prints are grouped based on approximate paper size (there a lot of off-size prints, some trimmed, most not); unmounted prints (mostly medium and smaller-sized) are stacked flat in archival boxes, in order of image id; a label on the box includes a size indication and the range of image ids; the boxes are the tan variety here:

a few hundred prints are dry-mounted on largish boards; these are stacked upright on shelves much as one might stack record albums — carefully, so that there isn't a lot of leaning or pressure, and with the openings of the sleeves facing back; they are grouped by size of print and then in order by image id, with paper dividers indicating what is what; there is a shelving diagram which assists with finding and reshelving prints

storage is in a cool basement room that stayed bone dry despite flowing water through the back yard in Boulder's recent 1000-year flood
