A gimbal needn't break the bank. This self made gimbal head (a copy of a Manfrotto 393) cost me about $10 and a few hours work. The imported quick release plate cost $8 of that. I started with a Linhof pan-and tilt head which has a good pan mechanism & spirit level which I retained. The tilt mechanism lever was removed & replaced with an Allen screw, tightened to lock it solid. The gimbal head was then mounted on the existing flange. All made from scrap & works like a bomb.
