A gimbal needn't break the bank. This self made gimbal head (a copy of a
Manfrotto 393) cost me about $10 and a few hours work. The imported quick
release plate cost $8 of that. I started with a Linhof pan-and tilt head
which has a good pan mechanism & spirit level which I retained. The tilt
mechanism lever was removed & replaced with an Allen screw, tightened to
lock it solid. The gimbal head was then mounted on the existing flange. All
made from scrap & works like a bomb.
