The sunset, two nights ago, as seen from Charlies Young Beach Park on Maui: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18181962&size=lg K-5 IIs, DA 18-135 zoom Comments are invited.
The color of this sunset is produced by "vog" from the Big Island, which had been drifting over to Maui because a high pressure area was diverting the usual trade winds from the Northeast. Vog isresults when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic", "smog", and "fog". Vog makes for colorful sunsets, but can cause headaches, watery eyes, sore throats, or even breathing difficulties if it is concentrated enough or persists for a long period or time. On Maui, it is usually quite mild compared to what can occur on certain portions of the Island of Hawaii (the Big Island).
