Since Process Version 2012 was introduced in Lightroom 4, the tonal
controls have been image-adaptive, which is basically another word for
"tone mapping". Here is a blog post I wrote on the subject at the

Keep in mind that since then Adobe has introduced HDR photo merge in
Lightroom, and the the basic tonal controls are able to corral a wide
range of tones in those images. So, yeah, tone mapping.
