Thanks. I've suspected something like this for a while now. 
Even in earlier versions of Lightroom the Curves control  didn't
behave the way a real Curves adjustment would: Adding a control point
in the center and moving it up or down often drives the extremes into
clipping, which shouldn't be possible with a real Curves tool.
