My youngest brother & his wife sailed around the West Indies for 7 years on
a 56ft ketch rigged ferro called "Dignity" (5 tons - built in Durban). They
even survived hurricane Luis in 1995 at St Maarten whereas most of the GF
ones succumbed.

There used to be a concrete hulled sailboat that I'd see from time to
time in Narragansett Bay, Block Island Sound, and Long Island Sound.
Can't remember her name, and Google failed me, but I was able to find a
picture of a different sailboat with a concrete hull.

They're out there. A lot of medium sized sailboats have a lead keel,
and they float so why not concrete.

There was also a concrete ship at the Bayonne (N.J.) Military Ocean
Terminal base that we'd view when the base was open. No idea if it might
have been a sister ship. It was hard to fathom as a kid that a concrete
ship would actually be built and float.

Very nice, Larry, especially the last one. Great sunset colors, in
addition to the interesting subject.
We have a concrete ship back in New Jersey. It if the SS Atlantus,
and it is located off Sunset Beach in Cape May.

She has also been broken up by storms, but a bit if her is still
visible. Unfortunately, I don't have any of my image of her with me.

When I was a kid, the end next to the pier was still open and we could
go
out on it. Lately, it's been a handy "front drop" when we've had a nice
sunset, and I've been in the South County and needed something
interesting
to put in front of the sunset. January 2015, I was driving home from a
job
in Watsonville, saw the nice sunset and stopped just to take advantage
of
the colors and got one of my favorite photos of the year.

On the bright side, even broken up it'll still be photogenic, and a good
place for cormorants to hang out.
