The new battery was introduced with the K-7, it's annoying that my K20D
uses a different battery than my K-5II. Not as annoying as the control
layout differences, when switching between the two, (so much so that I
seldom carry the K20D and K-5II together, but more annoying the rest of
the time.
I'm not arguing that the new battery wasn't a good move, it's much
superior to the old.
The K20D is still too good to simply abandon and in it's battered and
broken state not worth selling, though probably worth more in cash than
Dave Brooks' oldest Nikon, and there's really no justice in that.
Still a K-7 would be a much better backup, but I skipped that generation.

Good for you Paul! Congratulations both on the new knee and the new (camera)
body.
I have been sitting here thinking of all the reasons why I don’t need the K-1. I
have the 645Z for landscape & macro, I have the K-3 for birds and other
wildlife. And as a convenient carry-along to dinners and parties.
But then I realized! Since the K-1 will shoot in crop-sensor mode for the DA
lenses, and assuming that the cropped-in-camera images are at least equal to
the K-3 APS-C images, the K-1 would substitute nicely for the K-3 and give me
the advantage of newer (better) SR, focusing, etc. plus built in Astrotracer
and wifi...
I am not going to jump in right now, but I will be looking forward to seeing
some comparison shots with, e.g. the DA*50-135 on the K-3 vs. the same lens on
the K-1 in crop-sensor mode.
Exciting times!
By the way, it is really trivial, but I do so much appreciate the fact that the K-5,
K-3, 645Z, and now the K-1 all use the exact same battery. It may even have been the
same back as far as the K-10 or K-20. The Pentax engineers really seem to understand
the mantra “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…"

This is so exciting, and I’m very happy for Pentax! The price is amazing!
Though I’m going to have to wait a bit, this camera is definitely on the list!
Layout of buttons and such looks great! Wifi, GPS et al! Really cool! Can’t
wait to see your photos, Paul!
Go Pentax!
Cheers, Christine

I had planned to wait awhile for the price to drop before buying a K1, but at
$1800, I figured, why not now! Ordered from B&H because they know how to ship
cameras and are good when there's a problem.
Since I had expected to spend 3K for the K1, this opens the door for the
24-70/2.8 real soon.
