With the Epson software I just try to get close, primarily with the levels and 
color balance adjustment. I scan at 4800 for the most part with unsharp mask 
turned off, then fine tune and sharpen as necessary in Photoshop. I scanned a 
bunch of 40 year old  bw negs and transparencies for "Elapsed Times" mag, and 
they looked great in print.
