However, some programs do (unless specifically configured not to do so).
E.g. alpine (pine) -- which is a classical Unix-shell mail program does
that. And this week, I finally discovered the option that disables that:

well pine is certainly an unexpected co-conspirator in the convert-to-multipart-when-Unicode-is-encountered scheme, i used pine for a while, but it was in the pre-Unicode days

That description made me a bit nostalgic.
I realized that I haven't used "Usenet" (not via Google-groups interface)
for about 10 years...

nostalgic, yes; i was a heavy user of Usenet 1978-82, and then again something like 87-99; bought and sold a fair amount of stuff, including a Canon 20mm lens, via Usenet, which was among other things the proto-craigslist

It's funny that people are still actively using those Usenet (Google)
groups. And here is a recent thread discussing Pentax K1 there:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.photo.digital/nHwuriadq7Q

i think you can still read them via the true Usenet protocols, though Google Groups is more convenient

takes me back … that thread was not really about the K-1
