These are the native "apple bananas," Apple bananas are shorter and
plumper than regular bananas, with a thicker peel. The flesh is firm
and creamy. The flavor and aroma are more intense, with hints of apple
or even pineapple and strawberry as it ripens more. They are widely
available on Maui, and generally picked when just ripe, making them
much tastier and satisfying than bananas picked when green and hard in
the Caribbean.
