I hope to by adapter free with the new monitor. I did try putting the
DVI to VGA adapter onto the HDMI to DVI adapter and using the HDMI port
for the VGA monitor - but it did not work. Got a blank screen.

An irony about my current setup is that both monitors are using
adapters. The one with the VGA port is connected to the card's sole
DVI port with an adapter, and the one with a DVI port is connected to
the HDMI port on the card, again with an adapter. I could not easily
locate an HDMI to VGA or DIsplayPort to VGA adapter locally and wound
up with this setup.

It mihgt be obvious, but just in case: make sure you have chosen
which connection would be common for your video card and the monitor.
Dealing with adapters is possible but could be an extra headache.
