Tire Rack… This is the fourth or fifth set of tires I'm buying from Tire Rack,
all thumbs up for them. Most of the tire dealers around here are like the old
stereotype of shady used car dealers. I buy from TR and have the tires shipped
directly to an excellent shop that has a rolling road tire balance machine and
the best four-wheel alignment setup in the area—they do all the local racers'
cars as well as have working arrangements with the Porsche, Lamborghini,
Ferrari, and other high end car dealers. It's a slick setup.

I've not had any bad experiences with Michelin tires, they've always been good,
but I haven't tried them on the SLK. I've tried tires that I see others on the
SLK forum have been happy with. One was a dud - can't remember, either
Bridgestone or Yokohama - that wore so unevenly that after 4000 miles I tossed
them. The Conti ExtremeContact DWs were unusual in that they were able to be
mounted rolling in either direction, so I could do side to side rotation
without having to unmount/remount them. I ended up not doing it anyway; they
wore perfectly evenly which says a lot for the quality of the alignment work.
They gave a plush, quiet ride with a slightly soft turn-in, but amazing grip
and excellent braking performance. The Goodyears I'm trying this time are also
well-spoken of on this car, with supposedly a slightly sharper turn-in,
slightly less noise, etc.

Traffic is so bad these days, I dislike driving so much, and I've become such a
pokey old man on the road that I should just go get myself a BMW i3 or FIAT
500e to run errands with, but I really like the little yellow Merc. :-)
