Hi Zos, Thanks for responding. As I mentioned in an earlier message, the problem has been resolved. The mini display port to display port cable that Dell provides won’t work with the iMac 27 Retina 5K, but Apple’s thunderbolt cable works, providing a USB cable is used to link the Dell monitor to the iMac. Took a lot of experimentation to figure that out. Dell doesn’t provide any Mac support whatsoever. I don’t know why the USB cable is necessary. Perhaps it powers some component of the monitor.
In any case, the Dell P2715Q working now as my second monitor. It differs in operation from the second monitor I was using previously — a 2010 iMac in target mode. The old iMac had half the pixels as the 5K version, and when a doc was moved to the old iMac screen, it would rescale it and show it at the same size it was displayed on the 5K. In other words, if I was displaying a photo at 100% on the 5K monitor and moved it over to the old iMac monitor, it would automatically show it at 50%. The Dell on the other hand, displays the same doc or image proportionately larger.. The 5K is 5120 by 2880, where the Dell is 3840 by 2160, so the same image or doc is shown on the Dell as about 30% larger. That works for me since I use it for my mail list while writing and for my tools while photoshopping. With both monitors calibrated to the same specs, the Retina 5K is slightly more saturated and a wee bit warmer, but they’re a good match overall. I suspect that since it’s 4K, the Dell will be great for watching 4K video. And with it’s less vibrant image, it gives me an opportunity to see how some of my photos might look on systems other than an Apple Retina.
