Now i can't get the vuescan program to load, the icon just bounces and i have to force quit.
have you tried unplugging the scanner and launching Vuescan? if that works, it's starting to sound like the scanner is borked — sending bad data over USB might make Vuescan hang; since you said you had intermittent success i'd also check whether the USB socket on the scanner has damage — i've seen devices rely on just the solder joint with the PC board to support the socket, and a bump can break them off
just to cover the bases, since you have an older OS version, i'd try both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vuescan, which you can get here:
