Larry,
Sorry to hear about your problems with Chase/Amazon.
In my experience, Chase is an average bank: not the best, but not
the worst. (Citi is much worse.)
Amazon, on another hand, is a company that has one of the best records for
their performance and customer service. Walmart.com is actually trying to
catch up with Amazon but so far couldn't get even close - neither in the
technical aspects of the online orders and returns, nor in the level of
the customer service.
In the past several years of having Amazon Prime membership, we've had
periods when a UPS guy was dropping off Amazon shipments 4 days a week.
That was a big time- (and money-) saver and a savior when you have a
little kid (especially in the area where the stores carrying baby products
are limited to Walmart & Target).
Actually, I think Amazon got us spoiled with the speed of delivery and
quality of customer service that other stores are now having hard time to
match that. I also think that Amazon was the reason why mail-order places
such as B&H and Adorama had improved their policies and customer service
in the past decade+ (and especially past 5-7 years).
Yes, we've had some screw-ups from Amazon, and one time (maybe 2?) we had
to bring a present after the party happened. But in all cases, Amazon
tried to do everything they realistically could to make up for the
problem.
Just saying...

I won't bore you with details of my travails right now but I got an email
notification of a promotion $30 off any order of $150 or more using my
Chase amazon rewards card. In the process of shopping I realized that I
needed two more large hard drives as both my working drive and my
secondary backup were close to full. When the dust settles, we're talking
a $600 order, and at checkout, I find out via a terse error message that
the discount code has been expired, over 12 hours early, and possibly just
a few minutes before I tried to check out.
After spending much time on the phone yesterday with multiple calls to
both Chase and Amazon, not even getting any sort of courtesy credit, I
cancelled my Amazon rewards card. My new Costco card gives me as much cash
back, it doesn't have to be at Amazon, and Costco is much less evil than
Amazon. Actually, Costco seems to be pretty darned ethical while Amazon
competes with Walmart in levels of evil.
This morning, the order that I had made, using the rewards card one last
time to collect $120 in rewards, wouldn't go through. They had not charged
the card when I made the order. I have 30 days to collect my rewards after
cancelling, but there is no way to collect them. Another call to Amazon,
then to Chase, with at least one transfer to someone in the right
department, I at least got the $120 applied to my account.
